Honda Civic Gen 10 Type R Tri Cooler Combo
The Wunderladen Racing Type R tri cooler combo is the ultimate and last cooling solution you'll ever need for your Type R!
From the factory the K20C1 has an oil heater that flows both engine coolant and oil through it to get the oil up to temperature faster. One of the primary reasons for doing this is for emissions as an engine that gets up to running temp faster creates less emissions. The downside is once the engine is up to running temp, now the coolant is tasked with trying to remove heat from the oil. This puts extra thermal load on top of an already overtaxed cooling system and if you're tracking your Type R you are probably well aware of how much these cars struggle to keep coolant temps in check on track and quickly get put into limp mode once they get too hot!
Unlike every other oil cooler kit on the market which all use a traditional sandwich plate, our kit uses an oil cooler housing that replaces the factory oil heater. The cooler housing uses -10 ORB ports for large leak free o-ring sealed connections. It features an integrated thermostat to allow oil to get up to temperature fast and then closes once the oil has reached running temperature and all oil is forced through the heat exchanger. Lastly, our cooler housing doesn't allow coolant to flow through it so the engine coolant is no longer tasked with having to remove heat from the oil, giving it more bandwidth to cool the engine block and cylinder head.
The heat exchanger we use is a robust 19 row unit and is located in the main grille where it can receive sufficient airflow. The mounting brackets are made from stainless steel and are designed in such a way that they interrupt airflow as little as possible. Not only that but the brackets are entirely bolt on, using existing mounting points on the car means no drilling holes or cutting any metal to make it fit.
As the name implies, we don't stop at just the oil cooler though. Just like the factory oil heater, there is also a transmission fluid heater too. Once again the cooling system is used to remove heat from the transmission via the heater block bolted to the front of the transmission. Our tri cooler combo gets rid of this heater block and plumbs the coolant to another 19 row heat exchanger and plumbs the transmission fluid to a short 10 row cooler.
The 19 row secondary radiator is mounted right next to the 19 row oil cooler in the main grille where it receives plenty of airflow and the 10 row transmission cooler is mounted behind the bumper on the driver side (LHD) behind the open vents in the bumper so it too sees plenty of airflow. The Type R transmission has an internal oil pump so no inline pump is needed! Just like the oil cooler brackets, the brackets for the secondary radiator and transmission cooler are made of stainless steel for great rigidity and superior corrosion resistance.
We wanted to give people the option of upgrading their cooling system in accordance with their needs as their needs grow so we wanted this system to be modular. If you already have our oil cooler kit but are now needing further cooling or just want the peace of mind that better cooling gives, there is an option to upgrade our oil cooler kit to the tri cooler combo. The upgrade option will not work with other brand oil coolers, you must have our oil cooler for the upgrade option to fit properly.
